CAREER HISTORY

Kent W Anderson

Over 30 years of post-doctoral clinical practice

If you live long enough you’ll likely have regrets. My biggest non-regret is the profession I chose. I knew in my teens I wanted to do this. I read every self-help book I could get my hands on. I knew I wanted to be a psychologist but back then it felt so much bigger than me.

On my first trip to USU I sheepishly knocked on the department head’s door. Fortunately he didn’t answer as I was in panic mode. I sat in the quad and watched other students passing by, trying to feel like I belonged. Yet my dream compelled me to press on despite very real and intense fears.

Five years later I was off to Oklahoma for internship, followed by Vancouver, Canada for a 2-year post-doc. IHC recruited me back to Utah to work in an outpatient clinic. I remained at that clinic for 13 years.

Yet owning my own space beckoned. It was a big risk yet one I was willing to take. I bought my current building in 2009. When I moved in 15 years ago it had 5 vacant offices. Since then I’ve witnessed 18 professionals operate their businesses in the building.

After all these years I love what I do even more than when I started. I intend to complete the final 8 years of my career here. I love Cache Valley and the many people I’ve come to know. I’m grateful for the kindness so many have shown and the life lessons learned along the way.
