Over 30 years of post-doctoral clinical practice
Life comes with regrets and, quite fortunately, some non-regrets. My biggest non-regret is the profession I chose. I knew early on that I wanted to do this. I read as many self-help books as I could find. I wanted to be a psychologist clear back then, yet it felt so intimidating.
On my first trip to USU, I was trembling as I knocked on the department head’s door. Fortunately he didn’t answer. I sat outside on the quad and watched the students pass by, mustering the courage to face the task ahead..
Five years later I had completed my Master’s and Doctoral studies, and was off to U. Of Oklahoma for internship. That was followed by Vancouver, Canada for a 2-year post-doc. IHC recruited me back to Utah to work in their outpatient clinic. I remained at that clinic for 13 years.
Yet owning my own space beckoned me. I bought my current building in 2009. When I moved in 15 years ago it had 5 vacant offices. Since then I’ve witnessed over 20 professionals conduct their businesses in the building.
After all these years, I still love what I do—more now than ever. I aim to complete the final 5 years of my career here. Nearly my entire adult life has been spent in the valley. My children were raised here, graduated here. I’ll always love Cache Valley and the many people I’ve come to know. Ti’ll be a sad but fond adieu in 5 years, as I intend to leave the Valley upon retirement. Yet I’ll forever be grateful for the million kindnesses shown, and the many deep and meaningful friendships enjoyed.
