FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of each session varies with each patient. Your insurance company decides what they agree to pay for the session. In order for me to see patients with a given insurance I sign a contract with the insurance company to agree to only charge what the insurance company allows. Some insurance pay the entire cost. Others require you to make a co-pay at the time of each visit. At times you have to meet your deductible before insurance starts paying. In those cases the charge will be whatever fee the insurance company allows, and not more.
What are your operating hours?
We are open from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday. We’re closed on weekends. Holiday hours may vary, so please call or check our website for specific information on those dates.
What age groups do you see?
I see people from age 5 to end-of-life. Children younger than 5 are often less verbal and are best seen by a therapist that has specialized training in working with preschool age children.
Do you take insurance?
I take most insurances. On occasion someone will have an insurance that I haven’t yet become a panel provider. In those cases I typically look to see if I can become a provider for that insurance company. Before our first appointment my staff will have let you know if I am a provider with your insurance and what the cost of therapy will be.
Do you do marital therapy?
Yes. Services offered are described in the section entitled “marital and couples therapy”.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. Prescription privileges are reserved for medical doctors (including psychiatrists, who are specially trained in the selection of appropriate medications for psychological disorders) or psychiatric nurses who are licensed in the state of Utah to independently prescribe medications for psychological disorders. From 2008-2010 I completed a 2 ½ year post-doctoral master’s degree in clinical psychopharmacology. This is the educational component required for psychologists to ultimately receive prescription privileges in states that have decided to grant prescription privileges to psychologists who receive this advanced training. For instance, Idaho grants prescription privileges to psychologists with the educational training I have received if they further pursue prescription privilege under the supervision of a medical doctor. Utah does not grant prescription privileges to Utah psychologists. Thus I have pursued advanced training in psychopharmacological medications but cannot prescribe. But this knowledge allows me to be more familiar with the medications you may be taking and how to communicate with your prescribing professional regarding issues and adjustments to medications that you may desire.
Is therapy confidential and are there limits to confidentiality?
Yes, everything we discuss in therapy is confidential and protected by the ethical code of my profession and by law. I make a note after each session Those notes are securely safeguarded and are not released to anyone without your written authorization. Whenever I release information with your permission I show you what will be released or discuss it with you so you are aware of and approve of what is disclosed. Limits to confidentiality include when someone is seriously and imminently suicidal, as it’s my duty to always try to save and preserve life; when someone is seriously and immenently homicidal, with the same duty to save and preserve life; and if serious abuse or neglect of a minor, disabled adult, or the elderly is reported to me. It is my duty also to protect those innocent and vulnerable persons who are not in a position to protect themselves.
Can you be contacted after hours?
If you call my office after hours you can leave a message on my answering machine. It will be returned the next business day. The message on the answering machine provides instructions to handle an emergency situation. These include calling 911 or going to your nearest emergency department for immediate care. As I am a sole practitioner I need to attend my personal and family life and have no colleagues with whom we provide mutual after-hours coverage. Thus I try to limit my professional availability to my posted office hours. I do consider it to be in your best interest that I rejuvenate during my off hours so I can be maximally effective during work hours.
Are you available by text or email?
I have posted my email address and am available for professionally necessary communications through that medium. My receptionist is available to text during normal business hours. I reserve texting for my personal life, as texting availability would essentially eliminate my ability to attend to my family life without having to constantly be on my phone. I do believe overall we all tend to be on our phones too much, and there’s a lot of life enjoyment and exigencies that exist away from our screens.
Who do you contact to make payments or discuss your account?
On this website I have posited the number and email address of my billing service. My billing is handled by the Central Billing Office. Their phone number is (435) 753-1600. You can email either Tracey at tracey@centralbillingoffice.com or Ashlee at ashlee@centralbillingoffice.com. Ether one will be glad to assist you with any question or concern that you may have about your account.
How frequent are sessions, how long is a session, and how many sessions do you need to have?
This differs with each person and we will determine together what works best for you and your situation. In general sessions are held once a week for about 55 minutes. I use the final 5 minutes to make a note about what was discussed during the session and how you are progressing. There are some people who come in for just a few sessions to address a specific problem. Some want a one-time assessment or diagnosis without desiring therapy. Some people come in over a long period of time because they find value in taking time to address the problems that come up in their lives and like having a sounding board and someone to check in with. Most people make an initial 10 sessions after the first appointment, but we will make that determination together. Largely I let you decide how much you want to utilize my services.
Do you offer services in Spanish?
Yes, in fact my wife is native Spanish speaker and Spanish is currently the primary language used in our home.

Are pets allowed?
Yes. People are welcome to bring their pet with them into my office. I actually enjoy getting to know your pups. My entire office contains wood flooring which is easy to clean in case of mishaps. I have found that people have shown good judgment in knowing if their pet is public-friendly, potty-trained, and leash-necessary.
Is your office ADA compliant?
Yes. The front door has double doors. Door widths are ADA-complaint. There is a ramp both to reach the sidewalk from the road and to get to the front doors from the sidewalk. I have had several people come to sessions in wheelchairs or walker without problem.
Is parking available at the office?
Yes
How do you schedule sessions?
The process is well-described in the section called “how do I make a first appointment”. In general, you can call (435) 752-7627 or (435) 792-3710 and the receptionist will walk you through the process.
What if you need to cancel or reschedule a session?
Whenever possible, it’s best to cancel with 24 hours notice which allows us time to fill the vacated slot with someone else who may want to take the session. Yet I understand that unforeseen circumstances occur. Simply call the numbers provided to reach the receptionist. She will handle any cancellations or schedule adjustments that you may need to make.
Do you do psychological testing?
Yes. Services provided are detailed in the section entitled “psychological testing and evaluation”.
Do you offer telehealth sessions?
Yes. This allowance became prominent during COVID, where virtually all therapy was conducted remotely from my office while speaking with people from their homes. Insurance still allows services to be rendered in this manner. Arrangements to conduct sessions remotely rather than in-office will be a topic that we discuss together.
What types of problems do you treat?
My postdoctoral training specialized in the treatment of anxiety disorders, which included obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. I have also received formal training in the treatment of depression. Over the years I have treated pretty much all conditions and problems that present to my office. Under the ‘credentials’ section I have included my curriculum vitae. There you can see what my formal training has been in and also the areas of continuing education I have taken to expand and enhance the areas that I can competently treat.
Can you also see my family member or can you bring your spouse in?
I frequently see members of the same family. Sometimes this works well to have the same psychologist see members of the same family, but sometimes it works best for each to have their own therapist. This is determined on a case-by-case basis. I will be glad to review the pro’s and con’s with you so the best decision is made for everyone involved.
